About my S.C.A. & Reik Felag alter-egos,

Sionann & Gala

Exhausted, while autocratting 12th Night, 2008.

I am Sionann in Ui Fhlaithbheartaig,
Namesake of a Goddess, powerful and true,
Christened for the river where emerald Eire draws its life.
Sometimes I am remembered of as Gala, the Half-Dane, whose name means "Lovely voice".
I come from across the sea to feast with the people of my Mother's line,
Grandmother's Grandmother's kin,
And the kin of my choosing.
Holly House familiar & Felagi Friends, your word fame rings true.
Lauded Skald of Tir Righ,
Many are the songs I sing,
Strong and clear the tones of gentle supplication.
Surely the birds are silent and heaven weeps to hear.
Melodious the notes I play.
Stirring poems I write.
Deftly I pluck the heartstrings of joy and sorrow till all is spent.
Beauty trapped in paint and stone, forever frozen,
Unlocked by my hands.
Music, Art, the lifeblood surging.
They are marrow of my bones.

Wearing my spiffy new cap onboard the Munin, 2007.

My frame looms large, if only to house the heart within.
Eyes changeable, flashing green, crystal blue, wintry grey.
See my soul in their myriad hues.
Gratefully I learn.
Passionately I create.
Quietly I serve.
Faithfully I love.

Gala, sitting and enjoying the dry and warmth inside Her Ladyship Sionann in Ui Fhlaithbheartaig, ('SHEE-oh-nan knee LAY-fer-tee'... or... 'Shannon O'Flaherty' for the Gaelic-ly Impaired), my SCA alter-ego, currently resides in the Barony of Lions Gate, in the Principality of Tir Righ, in the lovely Kingdom of An Tir (AKA: Vancouver BC, Canada). Sionann (B. ca. 1000AD Iarrconnacht, Ireland) is the daughter of an Irish sea-merchant/trader, Tigernan, and Brita Oilibhearsdottir, a Norse/Irish woman (B. ca. 980AD Jorvik, England). It has also been said that Sionann bears an uncannily striking resemblance to her gggg-grandmother, Gala Haldene (Half-Dane) Brynjolfsdottir (B. ca. 860AD), who hailed from around the Norse settlement of Jorvik (York), in northern England. (AKA: Gala Thyrisdottir) See Sionann's (and Gala's) family tree HERE.Sionann at Pennsic XXIX, wearing the bodice my ex-bf made me... it was incredible!!

Sionann is the current "Skaldic Champion of Tir Righ", has served on retinue as Lady in Waiting to Viscountess Bernadette Ebhilin Ard (former Princess of Tir Righ), autocratted and/or Co-Autocratted many events including An Tir 12th Night 2008 and An Tir Kingdom Bardic 2008, and is a former Bardic Defender of Lions Gate.  Sionann is a member of Holly House, and an Apprentice to Mistress Seiglynda of Elphinstone. She is also member of the Pure Wenching Tarts Society (P.W.T.S.)... (as a side note of interest:  Viscountess Bernadette's alter-ego, Bernie, is also a PWTS babe.)

Sionann Tir RIgh's first Coronet, standing in front of the Sionann enjoys dancing (when she is able), doing period music at Bardics, researching music stuff, some illumination (from time to time, though I need MUCH more practice), period style etchings and paintings (see one of the paintings Sionann did in the Portfolio Page 3... the bust painting). She also participates in archery on occasion (although she still can't hit the broad side of a barn, from the inside), likes helping in the kitchen or gate for events, and wenching (serving/waitressing) the taverns. Her current obsessions are playing her Anglo-Saxon Lyre, King David Harp, learning tablet weaving (so for this is not going as well as hoped... LOL), and trying to find someone to teach her Naalbinding...

Sionann, or rather, Gala, is also a member or Reik Felag, a Norse/viking Re-creation group, not affiliated with the SCA, though several members are, or have been, in the SCA. Reik Felag concentrates their interests entirely on the Norse culture, that of the Danes, meaning Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, Icelandic, Rus and Slav cultures, with a smattering of Anglo-Saxon, Scottish and Irish and even some Byzantine influences (basically anything or anywhere that the Viking were historically known to have traveled and traded).

Sionann's proposed S.C.A. Device (coat-of-arms.... which is the black/green with a white Dragonfly you see below) is still a work in progress and needs Heraldic advice.
